Rewind to summer of 2005, when I first saw Rihanna in concert in Riverhead, New York performing at the Y100 summer series concert. At that time her newest single "Pon de Replay" was the summer's anthem, and Rihanna Fenti, the Barbados native was just introduced to prime time.

Fast Forward to 2010, from New York to Miami, it's now five years later, and Rihanna has graduated to international super stardom headlining her own tours, and performing with an incredible level of maturity. The multi-platninum and Grammy award winning superstar took the stage at the American Airlines Arena in downtown Miami in high excitement to a full house.

She performed a string of fan favorites, including "Russian Roulette", "Love the Way You Lie", "Rude Boy", "Umbrella", "Unfaithful" among others.

"Rude Boy", a Dancehall anthem, with strong Caribbean and Reggae influences was a favorite among the crowd. There were also other elements that reflected her island roots, such as the stilt walkers(common theme for bacchanal throughout Barbados and the Caribbean) on stage during "Diturbia", her dance moves and the very color of her hair.

Her stage performance and set up was like a mini movie set with a weird twist of princess themes, such as the pink tanker that was anchored stage right, which she straddled the extending gun barrel at one point in her performance. It was definitely a night of big guns; back up dancers at times were elevated to the ceiling on huge guns on both sides of the stage, at one point in the concert she mounted one herself. Her costume choices included, inflatable and futuristic outfits with florescent lights, fishnets, latex catsuits, the signature hairdo with red on top, platforms and thigh high boots.

From the moving platform to the disappearing act, Rihanna dazzled her fans with an amazing performance. Her performance was exciting, engaging and provative at times, I am tempted to call her Crotch-Grabbing Rihanna. The album is titled Rated R, however the audience included fans from age 5 to 60 years old.

As for surprises, she treated us with a taste of what she learned in her drum lessons with Travis Barker. A fan was invited on stage to share the spotlight in the banging of the car at the end of the "Shut Up and Drive" song. Another surprise was Jamaican reggae superstar, Baby Cham who was seated immediately behind us. Baby Cham recorded "Boom Boom" (from the Ghetto Story Album)with Rihanna in 2006. He took his family backstage for a meet and greet with Rihanna.

Not forgetting the Latin community and fans in South Florida, she sang "Te Amo" (Rated R, 2009) which was a lovely treat with her attempting some pseudo Latin moves.

After performing "Take a Bow" from the Good Girl Gone Bad album, she left the stage; what most people thought was her last song, many of the fans started exiting the stadium, but the die-heart fans who screamed and stomped were rewarded with an encore that included a wardrobe change and a slew of favorites from her previous albums, including "Umbrella".

Last night was a treat, and Rihanna proves she is a rock star riding big guns with her black guitar. She ended the show after "Umbrella" with rains of red confetti against her black and white costume.

Should Rihanna career continue at the height it is today, I do believe she is geared to become the next Beyonce. She has incredible sex appeal, and strong entertaining stamina.

I cannot dismiss Ke$ha as she was also very entertaining in her own way. She was a rebellious one.

The American Foundation for The University of the West Indies (AFUWI) continues its fundraising efforts with Summer Groove 2010, featuring Reggae Singer, Ky-Mani, son of Reggae legend Bob Marley on Friday, August 20, 2010, at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum located at 145 Brooklyn Avenue, Brooklyn New York at 6:30pm.

The economies of Caribbean nations have been hit hard by the worldwide recession. Students in the region who are served by the University of the West Indies (UWI) are consequently experiencing hardship in meeting tuition costs that average US$3000 for the school year and other related expenses. At this time, the need to fundraise for needy students becomes an imperative and their best hope for aid.

The AFUWI is inviting the community to get behind the effort to give these students hope for tomorrow. “The education of the youth of our region is vital to the economic development of the entire Caribbean,” says Ms. Grant, Executive Director, AFUWI. “Our effort communicates to our youth that we see the promise of their capabilities and their future contribution to the region as directly dependent on their education and skill sets.”

Summer Groove 2010 is the perfect “lime” and networking opportunity for the many UWI alums and well-wishers who reside across the northeast. The setting – The Brooklyn Children’s Museum – is perfectly suited to a fun night of dancing, and, meet and greet.

“We are looking to reconnect with as many of our alums as possible who live and work, in especially, the tri-state area,” says Ms. Grant. She also remarked, “A strong and supportive alumnus will make our University stronger and hopefully create a smoother path for the Foundation’s work.”

The evening will feature entertainment and book signing by Ky-Mani Marley, Ano Okera raffles, games, steel-pan and dancing. Marley who just recently came off a 27 city US tour to promote his new autobiography, Dear Dad, has enjoyed tremendous success as a singer, actor and now author. With numerous successful albums under his belt, expect a thrilling evening of musical performance.

About the Injured Officers Assistance Fund

The Injured Officers Assistance Fund (”IOAF”) was created by businessman Michael Fux in 2008. The man who drew inspiration from listening to his dad’s collection of Sam Cooke, Ottis Redding, and others brought us back to the days of old last night, at the Seminole Hard rock.

As a young girl growing up in Jamaica, I enjoyed listening to Romantic Lovers Rock music, and Beres Hammond was of course my favorite.

To many outside the Caribbean community who may not be familiar with Lovers Rock; it is the alternate to R & B and soul music originating in Jamaica. It is soul music done with hoarse vocals.

Last night he sounded no different than he did 15 years ago. His performance started backstage as he waited for a minor technical glitch to resolve; the show must go on.

There was a screaming audience of hungry women as the King of Lovers Rock entered the stage.

“I love you, Beres!” echoed through the room as he ska-ed his way on stage.

It is quite amazing that after all these years of performing live, Beres is consistent in his performance and form. He was able to maintain a strong and lively vocal balance.

As expected he kept the momentum of the crowd going by offering them what they wanted. He sang several fast ballads, carried on with his usual antics on stage, his fancy foot works or dance moves as fans sing along to celebrated hits, including "Double Trouble", "Putting Up Resistance", "Tempted to Touch," "Sweet Lies," "Can You Play Some More? (Pull Up)," among others. He was so entertaining on stage at one point he kicked his shoe off. An audience member assisted him in putting it back on. It’s always a delight to watch him perform.

So, why do we love Beres? He makes us feel good, and he did just that. Listening to him dissolves the pain, stress and frustrations from our lives, if only for a moment.

You would have to be a bore to sit through the entire performance of a Beres concert. The minute he came on stage the audience rose to their feet, and the women moved closer to the stage reaching for a piece of Beres. They remained that way for the entire performance.

After about 45 minutes of high excitement on stage, he took a moment to lament on the political climate and bad press the island Jamaica received recently. He also reminded us, “It was just a small fraction…”

"Buju and I have something in common...," With those words he began "Can You Play Some More? (Pull Up)", Culture's son, Kenyatta came on stage with a wicked imitation of Buju Banton. The audience was screamed for more.

No Grammy awards, no international accolades, however Hammond remains a true Reggae Icon; the most consistent Reggae artist of his kind. His soul infused vocals, melodies and timeless style will continue to melt women hearts with "sweetness."

Side Notes:

The two (2) months "For the Love of It" North American tour featuring Beres Hammond, Inner Circle, Lenya Wilks and Kenyatta Hill made a stop at the Hard Rock Live, Hollywood, Florida.

Lenya Wilks, a new and upcoming artist opened the show with a smoother version of Lovers Rock. The audience was receptive to her performance, especially her new hit, "Fly" which seemed familiar.

Kenyatta Hill, the son of the late Joseph 'Culture' Hill followed with his militant style performance. He was fun to watch as he reminded me of Buju Banton. Buju was in the house (for a moment).

Inner Circle, well known for their international hits "Bad Boy" and "Sweat" continues to deliver the true sound of Jamaican music.
